OPTIMISING IMMUNE HEALTH WITH HERBS

While being vigilant and practicing good daily habits such as eating a variety of wholefoods, getting enough sunshine, adequate sleep, exercise, and personal hygiene are key to the defence against bacterial and viral infections, there are many clinically researched herbal medicines and their active constituents which have shown to be effective in supporting various aspects of the immune system to enhance the body’s innate defences.

Our immune systems work in symbiosis with all other body systems and needs to be kept in a state of balance or homeostasis. Sometimes things can be thrown off balance when we encounter a virus, or injure ourselves, or even if over time we have been consuming a western style diet with lots of high sugar, processed foods we can trigger an inflammatory state in the body.

Inflammation has historically been given a bad rap; however, it is the body’s chief defence against injury or infection and is a vital element in the healing process. It communicates to the immune system to heal damaged tissue, as well as defend against foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria.

Where it becomes a problem is when it becomes chronic and goes on for too long, or the inflammation becomes systemic and occurs where it is not needed.

How do I Clean my Coffee Machine?

Have you ever wondered how to clean your coffee machine with minimal time and fuss? Well strap yourselves in for a treat because we are about to talk you through how to enjoy the benefits of a clean coffee machine at home, the office or in your cafe.

Why is cleaning your coffee machine important? Because the coffee tastes better! Ooh yeah, and there’s also the benefits of having reduced maintenance costs.

We need to start with some terminology first:

Group Handle - This is the device that you dose and tamp the coffee into. Inside the group handle, there’s a hole for the filter basket and spout/s at the bottom where the coffee comes out.

Filter Basket - The little basket with lots of holes in the bottom that let the brewed coffee out. It sits tightly inside the group handle.

Blind Filter (basket) - Just like the filter basket mentioned above except without any holes. This is the basket we use to clean the machine.

Instructions - Group Heads:

  1. Remove the coffee filter basket from the group handle and swap it out for the "blind" filter.

  2. For daily cleaning (weekly for domestic), add 1/4 level scoop of Evo Espresso Machine Cleaner into the group handle. Insert the group handle back into the coffee machine as if brewing a shot of espresso. NB: if machine is cleaned less often, use 1/2 scoop.

  3. Start the cycle and allow to run for 7-10 seconds to dissolve cleaner; stop the cycle and allow to sit for another 7-10 seconds.

  4. Start and stop the cycle 4 more times, running each for 7-10 seconds and stopping for 7-10 seconds between cycles.

  5. Remove the group handle and rinse well under hot water (water from your coffee machine). You want to remove as much cleaning product as practical before completing a second cleaning cycle.

  6. Re-insert handle with blind filter to rinse. Start and stop the cycle 5 times - run for 5 seconds, stop for 2 seconds, ensuring a thorough rinsing. Remove the blind filter and re-insert regular filter.

  7. Brew and discard a single shot of espresso to re-season the machine. This last step is important to remove any remaining cleaning product from your coffee machine.

Instructions - Group Handles:

  1. Soak the group handles and filters in 500ml of hot water mixed with 1-2 scoops of Evo Espresso Machine Cleaner for 20 minutes. Pro tips: Submerge the metal components of the group handle but never the plastic/leather handle to avoid cracking. Always put hot water in 1st, before the cleaning powder. You can also put your filter basket into the cleaner at the same time. It’s best to remove it from the group handle first to make cleaning easier.

  2. Rinse thoroughly in running hot water and wipe with a clean, dry cloth. We don’t recommend using a scourer sponge to clean any part of your coffee machine.

  3. Insert your filter basket back into the group handle and return it back to your coffee machine. Make sure you warm up the group handle with warm water (from your coffee machine) before use. Coffee just doesn’t taste right from a cold group handle.

Just before the Spicy Flu made it’s way to Australia’s shores, we took a refresher Barista Course from the very talented Vincent Do at Australia Barista Training (ex Sydney Barista Training at Marrickville, NSW). If you haven’t done a course recently, it’s totally worth the investment. No matter how great your skills are, a refresher course will undoubtedly pick up some little habits you’ve acquired over time.

March is Small Business Month

Small Business Month is here, March 2022.  We will be profiling a number of our Partners throughout the month of March to showcase the people behind the small business we support. This will include our Customers and the Supply Partners that support us. Please keep an eye on our Facebook & Instagram accounts for more on this throughout the month.

Our Roasters are small, Australian owned businesses with many years of experience and a great love for their work. We are thrilled to be able to bring you such high quality, speciality coffee from Western Sydney, Australia.

Did you know that all our key suppliers are Australian owned except for SHOTT? They are New Zealand owned which is basically part of Australia anyway, right? Most of our suppliers also manufacture their goods in Australia too. We will be sharing more details on our Suppliers throughout March. If there’s something you are particularly interested in learning more about, email us here.

Our Founder, Berenice Walker started Emu Coffee in 2019 after a long corporate career in Franchising, Retail Hospitality and of course, all things coffee (have a peek a her LinkedIn profile for more details). She identified that many small business owners are all over their day-to-day operations however, doing ‘all the things’ left them limited time to explore how to develop and grow their business.

Did you know that Emu Coffee also has a special Facebook Group for small business owners called Coffee Constellation? If this sounds like something you would benefit from, join the community today.

Conversely, if you know someone that may benefit from working together, please let them know about Emu Coffee. We grow from referrals and appreciate your support.

We look forward to brining you profiles of like minded small businesses and would love to see you comment on our social pages. Thank you for supporting Emu Coffee, we believe that when you shop small your dollar goes further in the community.

Top Tips on storing your coffee beans

Do you know the best way to store your fresh coffee beans? We’ve heard some weird & wonderful ideas over the years.

The best way to keep your coffee fresh is to store it in a light proof and air-proof container in a cool, dry place.

Have you ever noticed the little circle ‘thingy’ that looks like a plug on the top of our coffee bags? It’s actually a one way air valve. It lets air escape out of the bag & doesn’t let fresh air back in. You can keep and reuse your 250g coffee bags to store your coffee & if your coffee habit has seen you upgrade to the 1kg bags, they aren’t resealable but you can always decant it into some 250g bags with a seal. If you need a spare 250g bag, let us know when you order your next kilo. You may also want to invest in a more permanant storage container.

What temperature do you store your coffee at? Ambient, in your kitchen cupboard is best. Coffee doesn’t like to be stored in the freezer as it’s great at absorbing moisture and the other flavours around it.

Ready to take it to the next level? If you have a grinder at home or can afford to invest in a small hand grinder then do it. Coffee is best served freshly ground. Did you know we can also grind your coffee freshly for you?
